Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

An old family favorite...

Wisconsin Dells has been a popular midwestern travel destination for over 150 years. The town is named for the "dells", beautiful sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River. Boat tours of this scenic river gorge began in 1856 and remain popular today. The town’s tourism industry has grown steadily over the decades. Today, this town of 2500 is a traveler’s oasis. In addition to a variety of boat tours, the area now is home to countless restaurants and shops, go-cart tracks, mini golf courses, amusement parks many waterparks. Proclaiming itself the "Waterpark Capital of the World", the Dells area now has 18 outdoor waterparks and 3 indoor waterparks including the country’s largest of each.

The scenic river and its unique rock formations can bee seen via the traditional boat tour, jet boat tours and a paddleboat tour. Another fun and unique way to enjoy the scenery is the DUKW. Known as the "Wisconsin Ducks", these amphibious WWII surplus vehicles are essentially boats with wheels. Capable of carrying about 20 passengers, the 60 minute tour begins on land through the tree lined hills along the river... then into the Wisconsin River and past the rock formations, up a flowing creek bed and across Lake Delton.

A short drive south of Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo is where the Ringling Brothers Circus began their first tour in 1884. Today, it is home to the Circus World Museum, a large indoor/outdoor museum celebrating the rich history of circuses around the world. The museum preserves over 200 circus wagons, the world’s largest such collection. The indoor portion displays history, posters and other aspects of circus history. Outdoors, visitors will see many of the remaining buildings from the original Ringling Brothers wintering grounds, train cars, and the Hippodrome, which hosts daily live circus and magic acts.

The Wisconsin Dells area has plenty of lodging and is easily accessible from I-90. It’s an old favorite that has been enjoyed for many generations.
